Low Plaza Granite Steps Restoration

A view of Low Plaza from Kent Plaza, during a sunny, spring day.

About the Project

Facilities and Operations restored the iconic granite steps leading from Low Plaza to Alma Mater, as well as the stairs and handrails leading to Dodge and Kent Halls to address natural wear and tear and uneven settling. These improvements followed the restoration work that took place at the uppermost portion of the steps during the summer of 2022.

Project Scope

The scope of work included:

  • Removal and repair of support piers for the steps between Low Plaza and Alma Mater as well as at the western and eastern steps of the Plaza leading to Dodge and Kent Halls.
  • Removal and alignment of granite steps between Low Plaza and Alma Mater as well as at the western and eastern steps of the Plaza leading to Dodge and Kent Halls.
  • Full restoration of the historic handrails at the stairs leading to Dodge and Kent Halls. All missing spindles and decorative supports were cast, recreated, and replaced. Restored handrails were reassembled and coated with a patina finish and reinstalled on site.
