Campus Planning and Space Information

The Planning and Space Information department provides facilities planning and strategic analysis of space and space needs for all schools and departments at the Morningside, Manhattanville, Lamont-Doherty, Nevis, and Baker Athletics Complex campuses.  This team provides both short and long-term perspective on University spaces with respect to its development, use and management. The department identifies ways to put all University space resources to their highest and best use.  It also defines and negotiates space exchanges between University departments and groups.

The department is responsible for ensuring that approximately 15.5 million square feet across 300 buildings in University space is developed, used and managed wisely within a comprehensive institutional planning context.  Planning receives requests for space changes and provides objective analyses of central university and departmental needs to develop potential solutions and proposed layouts.  As part of its planning mission the department also evaluates a range of urban planning, development feasibility and zoning issues.

The Space Information group keeps track of all University space, except at CUIMC, on computer-aided design (CAD) floor plans and linked databases. CAD plans, space assignment, occupancy and square footage information are available to Facilities and Operations personnel and other University faculty/staff authorized users. Detailed campus and neighborhood maps are also available on CAD. Information requests can be submitted through this web form.

Construction and engineering drawings are filed in Columbia University Facilities and Operations' Plan Room. Access can be arranged through Janet Grapengeter.
